The Detroit Medical Center (DMC) Department of Pharmacy Services provides a broad spectrum of services across all eight hospitals of the DMC. Complemented by an established affiliation with Wayne State University’s College of Pharmacy and School of Medicine, pharmacy practice is progressive and dynamic. A strong collaborative model exists between each hospital pharmacy department in the medical center. This long and recognized history of partnership is an integral component of a broader professional relationship with the medical staff and other health care professionals.
As reflected in our departmental mission statement, the provision of quality pharmaceutical care is among the top priorities of the DMC Department of Pharmacy Services. To fulfill this mission, the DMC employs well-trained clinical pharmacists and clinical pharmacy specialists. Our clinical pharmacists and specialists provide patient care in many areas of practice, where they work closely with physicians, nurses, therapists, and most importantly, our patients, to prevent, as well as identify and resolve medication-related problems. We use technology and pharmacy technician support in innovative ways to maximize pharmacist involvement in numerous clinical practice areas. Pharmacists at the DMC participate in patient care activities for a variety of patient populations ranging from the neonate to the geriatric. The DMC pharmacist is an integral part of the health care team at each of our hospitals.
Among the many services provided are established clinical practices led by clinical pharmacist specialists in infectious diseases, neurology and neurosurgery, internal medicine, surgery, cardiology, burn, emergency medicine, critical care and others. Established PGY1 and PGY2 specialty residencies in many of these areas are highly desired by candidates from across the country.
The provision of optimal pharmaceutical care continues to be the focus of professional practice and, in recent years, has been strengthened by the incorporation of leading technology into daily practice. The DMC has fully integrated electronic physician prescribing, electronic medication administration records and point of care bar code scanning of all medications. The Department of Pharmacy Services with its long history of progressive clinical practice continues through innovation and technology to provide a rewarding and challenging professional experience.
