The DMC Longitudinal Advanced Pharmacy Practice Program

Offered to Wayne State University P4 Pharmacy Students 2008 - 2009

The Detroit Medical Center Department of Pharmacy Services is pleased to provide a Longitudinal Advanced Pharmacy Practice Program to Wayne State University students entering their fourth professional year in the Doctor of Pharmacy Program. The DMC Longitudinal program has been developed to capitalize on the advantages of a multi-hospital organization and its variety of options available to the student, while providing continuity to the student experience from rotation to rotation. DMC longitudinal pharmacy students will be matched with a Homebase Hospital. Although not all DMC facilities will be considered a Homebase Hospital, all hospitals are available for student rotations. Homebase Hospitals (HBH) sponsoring longitudinal students include Children's Hospital of Michigan (CHM), Detroit Receiving Hospital (DRH) and Harper University Hospital (HUH). Students that choose not to participate in a longitudinal program will be eligible for clinical rotation assignments to the DMC after all DMC longitudinal student rotations are scheduled.

Program Structure:Consistent with the WSU policy for longitudinal student placement, students may interview with DMC facilities considered as Homebase Hospitals (CHM, DRH, HUH). Based on hospital and student matching, students will be assigned to a homebase DMC facility. All DMC longitudinal pharmacy students must complete rotations in the following areas: 1) general hospital; 2) general community; 3) ambulatory care; 4) acute care/medicine; 5) patient care core; 6) two elective rotations. The six-week general hospital will be conducted as a group (all DMC longitudinal students) with portions held at each Homebase Hospital. Longitudinal students will be required to complete at least 4 rotations at their homebase hospital. The remaining rotations may be taken at another DMC facility, or can be taken outside of the DMC if available. Homebase Hospitals include Children’s Hospital of Michigan (maximum of 2 students*), Detroit Receiving Hospital (maximum of 4 students*), and Harper University Hospital (maximum of 4 students*). Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital and Sinai-Grace Hospital will provide rotations for students, but not function as Homebase Hospitals. * = the number of students accepted is subject to change

Pharmacy Services at the DMC:

As reflected in our departmental mission statement, the provision of quality pharmaceutical care is among the top priorities of the DMC Department of Pharmacy Services. To fulfill this mission, the DMC employs well-trained clinical pharmacists and clinical pharmacy specialists. Our clinical pharmacists and specialists provide patient care in many areas of practice, where they work closely with physicians, nurses, therapists, and most importantly, our patients, to prevent, as well as identify and resolve medication-related problems. We use technology and pharmacy technician support in innovative ways to maximize pharmacist involvement in numerous clinical practice areas. Pharmacists at the DMC participate in patient care activities for a variety of patient populations ranging from the neonate to the geriatric.  The DMC pharmacist is an integral part of the health care team at each of our hospitals.

Our Hospitals:

The DMC is an integrated academic health care center with over 2,000 hospital beds serving the people of southeast Michigan. The health center is composed of seven hospitals, two nursing centers, and approximately 150 outpatient facilities. Our 100-acre Central campus in the heart of Detroit, is the hub of the DMC consisting of Children's Hospital of Michigan, Detroit Receiving Hospital and University Health Center, Harper University Hospital/Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan, and Hutzel Hospital. The Northwest region contains Sinai-Grace Hospital and the Oakland region contains Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital.

  • Children's Hospital of Michigan (CHM) is the region's premier site for health care of children. CHM is a 245-bed hospital that employs highly skilled specialists in all areas of pediatric medicine, surgery, and allied health services. The hospital provides for the total health care of children from birth through adolescence. Specialty areas include cardiovascular surgery, burn care, hematology/oncology, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, sickle cell and hemophilia clinics, pediatric and neonatal intensive care, and, heart and renal transplantation.

  • Detroit Receiving Hospital and University Health Center (DRH/UHC) is a world-class Level I trauma center with specialized units for spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, burn, and psychological trauma. The 340-bed inpatient and 92-bed emergency services facility specializes in the critical care of emergency patients. University Health Center is one of the largest multi-disciplinary outpatient facilities in the country. More than 200,000 patients are seen annually. This nine-story facility offers a full range of ambulatory care services including 12 primary care and more than 25 medical specialties.

  • Harper University Hospital/Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (HUH) provides a broad range of services in both inpatient and outpatient settings including general medicine, hematology, nephrology, cardiology, infectious diseases, neurology and neurosurgery, pulmonology, gerontology, and renal transplantation. Specialty patient populations served include those with sickle cell disease, HIV and adult cystic fibrosis. Associated with Harper Hospital is the Wertz Clinical Cancer Institute and the Karmanos Cancer Center, a designated regional cancer center. Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM) is a complete inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation facility. RIM works with patients who need assistance in returning to activities after an illness or accident.

  • Hutzel Hospital is a referral facility for obstetrical and gynecologic patients and has more than 9,000 deliveries annually. Hutzel is a regional center for high-risk deliveries, and approximately 12 percent of the newborns require admission to the neonatal intensive care unit. It is also the center of program emphasis for orthopedics and ophthalmology (Kresge Eye Institute) within the DMC.

  • Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital (HVSH) is a 153-bed community-based hospital located about 45 minutes away from the central campus in northwest Oakland County. Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital offers a variety of inpatient and outpatient services ranging from newborn to geriatrics. Associated with the facility is the Karmanos Cancer Center, an outpatient cancer center offering care for oncology patients in Oakland County.

  • Sinai-Grace Hospital (SGH) is a 404-bed general medicine facility offering a full range of inpatient and outpatient services. The community-based facility is the only major trauma center in northwest Detroit. This, in conjunction with a comprehensive cardiovascular program, make Sinai-Grace's emergency department one of the busiest in Southeastern Michigan. In addition, more than 1500 physicians provide expertise in 30 medical specialties including: internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics/gynecology, adult and neonatal intensive care, emergency medicine, oncology/hematology, nephrology/endocrinology, geriatrics,
